EREMYA CHELEBI KOMURCIYAN
1637-1695

Armenian intellectual.

17th century.

Istanbul.

Archivist.

Poet.

Wanderer.

Water.

Path.

Tree.

After a brief but fruitful life of 58 years, Kömürciyan left behind an impressive body of work. These writings, which range from prose to poetry and cover topics as diverse as religion, geography, history, and humour, are the best evidence of his intellectual range and versatility.

The tomb tells about Komurciyan to its visitor. The in-betweenness of his literary journey and his production is the biggest source of inspiration for design. The second point is the interaction between the tomb and the visitor; for the tomb cannot find its true definition without a visitor. At this point, the visitor is a catalyst at the beginning of everything, and the journey cannot begin without him. The visit thus evolves into an interactive and didactic experience and takes a place in the memory.

Water imitates Komurciyan. It bears his name in its depth. It overflows with the slightest movement of the visitor.

The path has different meanings for each visitor. Some refer to the Bosphorus, which weaves the two seas together; while others see the Golden Horn hiding the reflections of the golden sun on it. For some, it is spatial; it carries streets, squares, bridges, and gates on it.

Every part of the tree conceals a distinct kind of beauty. With the passage of time, it develops and strengthens, blossoms and produces fruit.
